Whale Watchers Inn is situated on the Whalecoast and is surrounded by two natural phenomena - The Breede River Estuary and the Ian Ocean.  Endless, white sandy beaches are available for that long stroll and the San Sebastian Bay, which Whale Watchers Inn overlooks, is the home of the Southern Right Whales who can be viewed either from the beach, or from your balcony.

Witsand is a wonderful, unspoilt seaside resort which offers the following attractions:

  • Safe bathing
  • Windsurfing
  • Rock and Surf Angling
  • River Angling
  • Deep Sea Fishing
  • Fly Fishing
  • Snorkel Diving
  • Spear Fishing
  • Whale Watching
  • Water skiing
The Breede River starts out at Witsand and is one of the largest, most navigable rivers in South Africa.  It supports an amazing variety of fish and birdlife.

The wealth of fish in the Breede River naturally attracts fish-eating birds such as the majestic fish eagle, the osprey, fish owl and kingfisher. The area is also home to an amazing variety of other birds and water birds.

Die Pont
35 kms inland from Witsand is the small historic village of MalagasMalagas is particularly famous for its "man-drawn" ferry ("die pont") across the Breede River - a nostalgic relic of a slower, quieter era. This service began in 1860, current model, 1952 - and still carries people, vehicles and livestock across the river every day.
The area is home to some of nature's most spectacular floral displays, including proteas, ericas and reeds.  These flowers are best viewed on foot along some of the best hiking trails in the country.

The following are strategic locations on the Whalecoast Flower Trail:

  • Pauline Bohnen Nature Reserve, Stillbaai
  • Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve
  • De Hoop Nature Reserve
  • Rein's Nature Reserve
  • Tradouw's Pass
  • Gynsmanshoek Pass
  • Snelsetter Flower Trail
Your hosts will assist you in your quest for the floral wonderlands of this area.

While staying at Whale Watchers Inn, please feel free to take a mountain bike ride around the area - an enjoyable way to view our magnificent coast!
